Accounts for student learning in either an in-person or virtual learning environment based on student selection made during spring 2021. Masks are optional for fully vaccinated students and staff in secondary schools. Masks are required for students and staff in elementary schools and combined schools (i.e., grades PreK-8, grades 3-8).

  • Elementary students and schools with students in combined grades (i.e., PreK-8, grade 3-8) returning to in-person learning under a traditional bell schedule will maintain physical distancing of at least 3 feet, to the greatest extent possible. Students and staff will be required to wear masks.
  • Secondary students (grade 6-12) returning to in-person learning under a traditional bell schedule will maintain physical distancing of at least 3 feet, to the greatest extent possible. The wearing of masks will be optional for fully vaccinated students and staff.

Those students (K-12) who requested virtual learning will be served through Virtual Virginia’s online program.

  • All students returning to in-person learning under a traditional bell schedule will maintain physical distancing of at least 3 feet, to the greatest extent possible. Masks will be required for all students and staff.

Those students (K-12) who requested virtual learning will be served through the Virtual Virginia online program.

School and/or community metrics dictate that all teaching and learning is provided in a virtual environment for all students as determined by CDC and VDH guidance.

  • All students who opted for in-person learning during the 2021-2022 school year will participate in virtual instruction that will be delivered by their roster teachers.

Those students (K-12) who requested virtual learning prior to the start of the school year through the division’s virtual learning application process will continue to be served through Virtual Virginia.


Guidelines for all phases will be reevaluated by no later than the end of the first marking period.
