Cary teacher says farewell to students she has taught for five years

Most elementary teachers have students in their class for a year or possibly two; however, Missy Dickerson at Cary Elementary School has taught the same students for five years – grades one through five.

It is not unusual for a teacher to “loop” with his or her students and teach them the next year, but it is rather unusual to loop with them for five years. While some have moved and some new students have moved into the class, the majority of the class has stayed the same.

In order to loop with her students, Dickerson had to learn new curriculum each year, master new content, and recreate resources. One thing that did not change each year was her consistency and love for the children.

As shared by Dickerson’s coworker Sarah Naugle, “Their bond is truly remarkable. She visits their homes to drop things off and has a great relationship with the families of her students as well. I like to call her our own Mr. Feeny.”

Dickerson also transforms her classroom each year to help her students study for SOL tests. This year she turned her room into a Harry Potter theme which included turning herself into Harry Potter.

Naugle adds, “She is truly an amazing teacher.”

Dickerson shared, “When I set out on this journey, I never thought it would last five years. In those five years, we have celebrated so many exciting accomplishments but also persevered through challenges as well. We have laughed, cried, and argued but above all we have loved hard! They are my heart and soul and my greatest accomplishment. The bond we share with each other is truly something amazing and I am forever grateful.”
