Hampton City Schools announces additional administrative changes - principal of Mary S. Peake Elementary, language arts curriculum leader and early childhood education coordinator

Hampton City Schools recently announced the following administrative changes for the 2021-2022 school year to include Mary S. Peake’s principal, the new language arts curriculum leader and the early childhood education coordinator.

Mary S. Peake Elementary

Sharif Hicks will be serving the Mary S. Peake Mighty Oaks team as the principal for the 2021-2022 school year.

Hicks began his teaching career as a fourth-grade teacher in Newport News Public Schools. He went on to teach elementary grades in Richmond Public Schools and New Jersey. He joined Hampton City Schools in 2015 and has served as an assistant principal at Bryan Elementary, Cary Elementary, and Andrews PreK-8 School with his most recent assignment serving as the International Baccalaureate program academy principal at Hampton High School.

He earned a bachelor’s and a master’s at Hampton University and an educational specialist degree in administration and leadership from Old Dominion University.

Moton Early Childhood Center

Heather Goode has been appointed as the coordinator of early childhood education and will serve the students and staff at Moton Early Childhood Center for the 2021-2022 school year.
Goode has 17 years of experience in public education, with 15 years in Hampton City Schools. For the past three years, she has served as an assistant principal at Armstrong School for the Arts and Mary W. Jackson Fundamental Elementary School (formerly Tucker-Capps). Additionally, she has teaching experience both at the elementary and middle school levels as well as experience as a co-coordinator for the HCS Summer Olympic Learning Academy, a SOL remediation program coordinator, and a PBIS committee member. Prior to her time in elementary, she taught gifted education and language arts at the middle school level.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport University and her master’s in educational leadership from Old Dominion University.

Language Arts Curriculum Leader

Shari Drake is joining the curriculum, instruction, and assessment team serving as the language arts curriculum leader for the 2021-2022 school year.

Drake has over 20 years of experience in leading teachers, students, and community members. She has served as a Title I coordinator for the past six years. Prior to her current position, she served as a Title I language arts coach, an assistant principal at Merrimack Elementary and Asbury Elementary and an elementary teacher at Cary, Armstrong, and Asbury.
She received a bachelor’s in biology from Christopher Newport University and her master’s in early childhood education from Old Dominion University. She continued to further her education and earned her educational leadership administration degree from The George Washington University.
