Academies of Hampton interns leave their mark at Fort Monroe Education and Visitor Center

On Thursday, June 9, 2022, three students from the Academies of Hampton showcased their work and celebrated the partnership as semester-long paid interns with the Fort Monroe Education and Visitor Center. Kecoughtan High School students representing the Academy of Architecture, Environment, and Engineering (AEE) as well as the Performing Arts Academy (PAA) highlighted the projects they completed during the semester. Dr. Francoise Bonnell, director of the Fort Monroe Education and Visitor Center, shared that the student interns received the stipend for their 18 weeks of work through a grant that was underwritten by Newport News Shipbuilding.

Ella McKenney (PAA), Suhana Mohammed (AEE), and Malachi Santiago (AEE) worked with historical artifacts and curated exhibits and archived materials for the online library. While all of their work was significant, each of the students was responsible for researching topics that were integral to the history of Hampton. Ella archived materials about women in military service at Fort Monroe; Suhana researched and cataloged the history of the Fort Monroe Lighthouse; and Malachi compiled a collection pertaining to the design and construction of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel project.

Ella who is interested in pursing a career in the military said, “I am grateful for this opportunity. I wasn't expecting the many benefits that I received while working as an intern at Fort Monroe. This has helped me with my interest in the military if I decide to enlist when I graduate.”

Suhana is interested in pursing a career as a dentist. When asked what skills she learned as an intern will be most useful in her professional career, Suhana stated, “I will definitely use Excel and Adobe for my career as a dentist.”

Malachi is interested in working at the Smithsonian in the conservation of archives. He said,

“When I found out that I got the internship, I was super excited because this is what I want to do when I grow up.”
