Al Hogwood of the special education department earns doctorate degree

 

Congratulations to Dr. Al Hogwood, behavior specialist with the special education department, for earning his doctorate degree. He successfully defended his dissertation, The Perceptions of Educators on How Therapeutic Day Treatment Programs (TDT) Service the Diverse Needs of Underprivileged African American Males, on April 5, 2022. His degree is with Grand Canyon University in Organizational Leadership.

 

Hogwood is a proud graduate of Woodside High School in Newport News. After graduating, he furthered his studies at Saint Leo University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. He continued his studies at Liberty University where he earned a Masters of Education, focusing on Teaching and Learning. He also holds an English as a Second Language (ESL) graduate certificate from Regent University. Hogwood has been trained in ABA therapeutic methods as an RBT trainee. 

 

He is an active member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. During his membership, he has served two terms as director of education. He has also served as an executive board member for Zeta Delta Sigma of Phi Beta Sigma Inc. Additionally, he is a former member of the National Urban League of Young Professionals. Hogwood served on the Diaconate Ministry of New Discipleship Worship Cathedral in Chesapeake, VA., being ordained as a deacon under the leadership of the late Bishop A. E. Moses. 

 

Through his career, fraternal organization, and church, he has had the opportunity to organize and participate in numerous activities in the community. He spent four years working as a volunteer with troubled youth at Chesapeake Youth Services. Through this work, he helped children obtain their court-mandated community service hours through service at city and state parks. He is a March of Dimes participant, by both participating and raising funds for the cause. Hogwood is a board member of the Pink-Collar non-profit, an organization that assists in providing hygiene products for children. Hogwood has also participated in numerous other community events such as clothing drives, scholarship drives, mentoring, mental health awareness, Clean the Bay events, as well as hosted Thanksgiving drives for needy families.

 

Hogwood has spent 15 years in the education field as a special education teacher and was named Teacher of the Year during his tenure. He has also spent years in the role of mentor health counselor where he provided direct one-on-one and family counseling and training to identified clients and their families in their homes on a weekly basis. Hogwood is a veteran of the United States armed forces, serving six years in the Air Force Reserves. He had the pleasure of being a part of the prestigious Memorial Affairs Unit.

Dr. Hogwood aspires to be a life-long leader and learner. I am proud of his accomplishments and thankful to have him on my team.”
