Lynn Kirkland and Sarah Williams receive Muriel S. Wright Office Professional of the Year Award

For the first time in the history of the award, there was a tie for the Muriel S. Wright Office Professional of the Year Award. Lynn Kirkland, administrative secretary in the office of psychological services and Sarah Williams, school finance officer at Jones Magnet Middle School, are recipients of the Muriel S. Wright Office Professional of the Year Award for 2022.

The Hampton Association of Educational Office Professionals (HAEOP) presented the awards at their annual recognition reception on Thursday, May 19, 2022. Hampton City Schools employees nominate individuals for the award and applications are judged based on criteria established for the award. Kirkland was nominated by her supervisor and the psychological services department and Williams was nominated by coworker Janice Gustafson.

“Lynn Kirkland is always – and I mean always – above reproach in her work ethic, honesty, punctuality, consistency, attention to detail, concern for others, and is a hallmark of professionalism in every way,” said Jeff Hart, coordinator of Hampton City Schools psychological services department.

Kirkland has worked for HCS for 26 years in various departments and schools. Prior to coming to HCS, she worked for Newport News Shipbuilding. She has been very active in the Hampton Association of Educational Office Professionals (HAEOP). Having been a member since 1996, she has participated on various committees such as hospitality and service projects, and has held the positions of secretary and membership chair.

Kirkland is also very active in St. John’s Episcopal Church where she currently serves on their vestry and is the altar guild chair. She said she loves to walk, enjoys the beach, reading, and is currently loving being a grandmother for the first time.

“Ms. Williams is a valued member of the Jones Magnet Middle School and Hampton City Schools family,” said Jones Principal Sharon Slater. “She unfailingly delivers outstanding customer service with a smile and genuine concern.”

Williams has been employed with HCS for 10 years. She also has many years of experience in the restaurant industry. She has held various positions to include hostess, server, bartender, and manager. In addition, she recently volunteered for the vaccination clinics during the pandemic and volunteers at Bingo night for the Knights of Columbus to help raise funds for non-profit organizations.

Williams is a Hampton girl who loves spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Sandy. She is adventurous and loves to travel. Her son, Brady, is a recent Army Boot Camp graduate.

Williams is a very active member of HAEOP serving as co-president, scholarship chair, treasurer, hospitality chair, and membership chair.

Congratulations to both Lynn Kirkland and Sarah Williams for their outstanding service to Hampton City Schools and for receiving this well-deserved honor.
