Mary S. Peake Elementary assistant principal Shanté Oniyide earns doctorate degree

Congratulations to Shanté Oniyide, assistant principal of Mary S. Peake Elementary, for earning her doctorate degree. She successfully defended her dissertation, Moving the Academic Needle for Students with Disabilities: A Basic Qualitative Study Examining Principals and Assistant Principals as Instructional Leaders for Special Education, on March 12, 2022. Her degree is with The George Washington University in Educational Leadership and Administration.

Oniyide earned her bachelor’s degree in inclusive elementary and special education from Syracuse University, a master’s degree in advanced special education preparation: learning disabilities from CUNY Hunter College, and her Ed.S., as well as her doctorate from The George Washington University.

Oniyide is in her 15th year in education with her fifth year as an assistant principal. Prior to moving to Virginia in 2013, she taught in Brooklyn, NY as a self-contained special education teacher, as well as a middle school English teacher. Oniyide began her career in Hampton City Schools at Booker Elementary School (now Albert W. Patrick, III Elementary School) as an inclusion special education teacher. After a short stint in another district, she returned to HCS as an assistant principal at Bassette Elementary School in 2017.

“I am elated to celebrate this achievement with my HCS family,” said Oniyide. “Much thanks to all who have continuously poured into me throughout my doctoral journey. My goal is to continue to learn, grow and provide exceptional leadership to ensure high-quality learning experiences and improved academic outcomes for all scholars.”
