Phoebus High School boys 4 x 400 team relay wins VHSL Class 3 state championship

Congratulations to the Phoebus High School boys 4 x 400 relay team for winning the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 3 state championship. The team is coached by Chineta Jackson-Davis.

The team, along with other athletes, participated in the VHSL Indoor State Track and Field Championships on the campus of Liberty University in Lynchburg Virginia on February 28 and March 1.

The 4 x 400 event was the last event of the two-day state championship meet. Leading the relay was junior Jordan Bass who also led the Phoebus football team to a state championship victory. He transitioned his football speed to track speed and has been an asset on the track. Senior Jacob Castilio, who ran the second leg, began running track at Phoebus when he was in the eighth grade. He is called their secret weapon because within a moment's notice he stepped in to run when teammate Kemon Driver twisted his ankle during the high jump competition. While running, Jacob stayed shoulder to shoulder with his closest competition. Senior Kymari Gray, who also led the Phoebus football team to a state championship and will attend Hampton University on a football scholarship, received the baton and opened up a slight lead. To complete the race, senior Billy Jones, III ran the anchor leg. He is a co-captain of the team. He pushed the lead, never looked back, and completed the race with the winning time of 3:30.89.

“We are excited about their accomplishments in the classroom and on the track,” said Davis. “We are looking forward to earning more state championships during the outdoor season!”
