Bethel High School graduate Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah wins the 2020 Butkus Award

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, a 2017 graduate of Bethel High School, is the recipient of the Collegiate 2020 Butkus Award.

According to information from the Notre Dame website, Owusu-Koramoah recorded 55 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, forced three fumbles, recovered a pair of fumbles (one of which he returned for a touchdown) and intercepted a pass. Eleven of his tackles were also for a loss.

His play in Notre Dame’s first meeting with Clemson back in early November likely went a long way in winning the award as the senior linebacker recorded nine tackles, forced a pair of fumbles, and returned a recovered fumble for a touchdown in the upset victory.

Owusu-Koramoah beat out Nick Bolton of Missouri, Zaven Collins of Tulsa, Devin Lloyd of Utah, and Monty Rice of Georgia who all were finalists for the Butkus Award.
Owusu-Koramoah becomes the third Notre Dame player to win the award all-time as he joins 2012 winner Manti Te’o and 2015 winner Jaylon Smith.

“Jeremiah was a true leader by example while at Bethel High School,” said BHS athletic director Lee Martin. “His success at Notre Dame is no surprise as his work ethic and faith are driving forces in his life. We are very proud of him and will continue supporting and cheering him on at the next level.”

Instituted in 1985, The Butkus Award is one of the elite individual honors in college football. In 2008, The Butkus Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, took stewardship of the award to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community while honoring the nation’s best high school, college, and professional linebackers. An independent Butkus Award Selection Committee comprised of 51 experts, including professional, college and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists, conduct the selection process.

"When a player receives the Butkus Award he will know two things. First, he is recognized as the best of the best linebackers in America. Second, and in the long run most important, he will understand that this recognition brings a responsibility to serve others by giving back."
