Student artwork selected for the mayor’s 2020 holiday cards

Each year the mayor’s office of the City of Hampton sponsors a Holiday Card Contest for art students attending the four Hampton high schools. This program began over 14 years ago with Mayor Ross Kearney II and each subsequent mayor has continued it. The mayor selects a theme and the high school students interpret that theme using any two-dimensional media that can be reproduced onto a card. A minimum of one piece from each high school is selected for the cards. The cards are sent to area business leaders and other officials to extend the mayor’s and city council’s holiday wishes. This program is a wonderful way to showcase Hampton art students and their great teachers.

This year the theme was Hampton’s Carousel in our downtown area. The carousel was built in 1920 and has been authentically restored to its natural beauty. It is only one of 170 antique wood merry-go-rounds still existing in the U.S. today.

Congratulations to the following student winners and their art teachers:

Bethel High School: Arianna Creasman, Grade 11; Aichoo Ashe, art teacher
Hampton High School: Shaza Shahata, Grade 12, Ashley Ault, art teacher

Kecoughtan High School: Isabella Hill, Grade 11; Madeline Brewer, art teacher

There will be a special spotlight meeting on Wednesday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall council chambers to recognize the winners. Due to COVID-19 safety concerns and in order to allow parents, teachers, and administrators to attend, each winning school will cycle in and out of the meeting.
